A Maths GCSE or equivalent has become increasingly important for those pursuing work and/or seeking to go into higher or further education. The Functional Skills Maths qualification is a recognised GCSE equivalent that will equip you with the desired knowledge and skills for your work, academic or personal goals.

We offer Functional Skills Maths qualification at Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2. You shall have an assessment prior to enrolling onto the course so that we can establish which level you should be starting with.

City and Guilds - Functional Skills Maths Past Papers

Course Summary

The Functional Skills Maths course is structured as individual online learning. This requires you to be independent up to a certain level and have the appropriate IT skills to work the programme.

You will however have a highly qualified and skilled tutor assisting you throughout your learning. They will oversee your progress including learning, mini tests, Skills Checks and assignments. You can request 30-minutes tutor support session each week if you feel you need support to overcome the difficulties you face in your learning content.  

By the end of the course, you will have updated your Maths skills in the following areas:

Whole numbers
This area of the programme shall bring you back to the basics by teaching you how to work with whole numbers which is the starting point for number confidence. This includes the calculation of whole numbers, ratios, formulae and proportions.

Fractions, decimals and percentages
You shall learn how to calculate mixed fractions and improper fractions, helping you further improve your mathematical skills. In addition, you will also learn how to convert fractions to decimals and percentages. These skills will assist you with day to day tasks such working out a 20% discount in the sales.

Common measures
Measuring skills are essential and are used on a daily basis for things such as measuring food for a recipes. Therefore, in this section of the programme, you shall learn how to measure area, volume and perimeter, how to apply measurements to diagrams as well as different shapes and angles.

Shapes and space (2D and 3D)
Shape skills can help you with everything from using space effectively when you are packing, to stacking shelves or planning a new room layout. In this section of the programme, you shall learn how to composite shapes, examine symmetrical shapes, nets and different viewpoints, such as bird’s eye view.

Handling data
This refers to statistical analysis. It will include gathering data from different graphs, charts and diagrams as well as calculating different types of averages.

Functional Skills Maths Course Information

In addition to updating mathematical skills, you will gain a recognised and highly desired GCSE equivalent Functional Skills Maths qualification. This will provide you with a good foundation of skills in the field of work or any further education you may decide to proceed with.

At the end of your course, you will take a mock test and if successful, you will be eligible to take the Functional Skills Maths exam.

Upon successfully passing the exams, you will obtain a Functional Skills Maths certificate from City and Guilds which is recognised and valued as a GCSE equivalent qualification.

Please note that it may take up to 20 working days for City & Guilds to mark exam and inform us of the results. If you have successfully passed all exams, it will then take up to 2 weeks for us to receive the physical certificate.

The duration of this course will vary depending on which level you begin with and how long it takes you to absorb the material. Each level must last maximum of 4 weeks.

During your enrolment, you and your advisor will discuss, in detail, how long each level should take you in accordance with the course layout and the level you achieved in your initial assessments. They will then set you a deadline and offer guidance and support to ensure that you reach it.

In order to qualify for the government funding, you must be 19 years or older, living within a London Borough postcode, in receipt of unemployment benefit and have not completed a similar level qualification.

Full eligibility check will be carried out during Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) session and when provisional enrolment is processed. 

You need to carry out diagnostics within our centre after your IAG session.

Please be advised that you will need to provide your ID, proof of address and proof of employment. 

Achievement Deposit is a payment towards your course where you will receive full-refund if you achieve the qualification within the agreed period. If you do not achieve, do not progress or drop-out, this fee will go towards the centre expenses. 

Online Learning - you will be given login details to access your online self-learning course. You are responsible to access and progress at least 10 hours  of online learning each week. 

Tutor Support - you can request to have one 30-minutes remote or face-to-face support session each week to help you out with the issues you are facing in your learning.

Mock Exam - You need to request to book a mock exam after you complete ALL your learning. The tutor will check you completed all your learning, including Skills Checks, before booking a centre-based mock exam for you. We will mark and return mock exam to you within 3 working days.

First Exam is fully-funded if taken within the agreed end date. You must complete and pass the mock exam to access the actual exam. Exams take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at our centre at 11am. 

Second exam is 50% discounted.

No discount for the subsequent exams. 

We will consider that you dropped-out from your course if you:

  • do not spend and progress at least 10 hours per week
  • you do not complete the Skills Checks as you progress
  • do not complete and achieve the course within the agreed period
Your course will end on the agreed end date and you will not be able to access any services
