Functional Skills Exams FAQ

General

Yes, Functional Skills qualifications are Ofqual regulated and considered as equivalent to GCSEs. 

Thousands of clients have completed Functional Skills Maths Level 2 and Functional Skills English Level 2 qualifications with Intech Centre and then gone on to further study at University. Whilst the vast majority of Universities do accept Functional Skills we do ask that you contact the University you are applying to ensure they will accept Functional Skills.

Please note that you can directly sit for computerised Functional Skills Maths Level 2 or Functional Skills English Level 2 exams without doing the course

Functional Skills Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE A-C or Level 4 +
Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE D-E.

Functional Skills English and Functional Skills Maths certificates are for individuals who are looking to obtain the essential skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them to confidently and effectively carry out tasks at work and in their everyday life. Generally, Functional Skills qualifications offer a softer and more flexible approach to obtaining a nationally recognised qualification suitable for further education, college, university or employment instead of taking GCSE qualifications.

However suitable for you:

We offer exam only option where you can just pay and take the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 or Functional Skills English Level 2 exams. You do not have to do the course with us.

You can have a look at different course options we provide. We offer funded, partially funded, private (online self-learning) options depending on the eligibility of the customers. Some options include exams inside it and some you need to pay separately.

Functional Skills assessments are graded as either a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’. There are no proxies and no portfolio elements for these qualifications.
Functional Skills Maths Level 2: one computer based examination
– Non-Calculator Section – 25% of total marks – 25 minutes
– Calculator Section – 75% of total marks – 1 hour 20 minutes

Functional Skills English Level 2: two computer based examination and group based Speaking & Listening assessment.
Reading– 1 hour computer-based exam
Writing– 1 hour 20 minutes computer-based exam
Speaking & Listening– around 30 minutes group-based

You can do the exams in our centre in London or remotely/online. 

The length of time taken to receive your Functional Skills exam result will vary subject to time of year and the awarding organisation. As soon as we receive notification of your result we will contact you to let you know.

We generally receive the result within 5-7 working days; but officially, it may take up to 20 working days for City & Guilds to mark each Functional Skills exam and inform us. On exceptional circumstances, it may take up to 32 working days. 

If you pass, we will email you e-certificate within 1-2 weeks. Once we receive the physical certificate, we will email you as well.

Depending on the need, there may be up to 25% extra time and/or a closed session. 

Exam

City & Guilds is the awarding body for both Functional Skills Maths and English qualifications that we provide in the centre.

The actual pass mark may vary slightly between assessment versions, to take into account slight variations in accessibility or difficulty and to ensure the standard of work required to achieve a pass is consistent.

You will need to bring your original and valid photo ID such as Passport, Driving Licences or Biometric Residence Card.

You are also required to arrive to the centre at least 30 minutes before your Functional Skills exam start time.

If you come on or after the test start time, you will not be able to take the test and there will not be any refund.

We provide the centre-based Functional Skills exams every Wednesday and Saturday at specified time slots which you will be notified of prior to the day of the exam.

We offer the online/remote Functional Skills Maths and English exams on weekdays.
