Exam Structure

In order to achieve the Functional Skills English Level 2 qualification, you must pass:

  • Reading Exam
  • Writing Exam
  • Speaking & Listening Exam

Online Functional Skills Reading and Writing exams will be facilitated and invigilated by City & Guilds. Reading & Writing exams are computer-based and you can do these remotely.

Speaking & Listening Exam is delivered via Zoom. Date that you book will only be an indication for us.

Our tutor/assessor will contact you to agree on a date for your remote Speaking & Listening exam via zoom. Please note that we choose times suitable for majority of the candidates and we can not guarantee any special time or day requests.
Once agreed with the assessor, we will email you the ‘Discussion’ and ‘Presentation’ topics at least 7 days prior to your exam date. Please check your emails regularly to ensure you receive the email and if you haven’t received it, 7 days prior to your exam, please call us on 020 7354 5655.

IMPORTANT! If we do not have sufficient candidates for the Speaking & Listening exam, we will contact you to reschedule your exam.

Duration

You must pass all 3 exams mentioned below to achieve Functional Skills English Level 2 certificate.

  • Reading Exam – 1 hour computer-based exam
  • Writing Exam – 1 hour 20 minutes computer-based exam
  • Speaking & Listening Exam – Internally marked group based discussion and presentation exam

It may take up to 20 working days, on exceptional circumstances may take up to 32 working days, for City & Guilds to mark the exam and inform us.
It may then take up to 2 weeks for us to receive the actual certificate if the exam result is a pass.

Pass Mark

Learners will be awarded either a pass or fail for each of the three components.

A Learner must achieve a Pass in all three components at the same level to achieve a Pass at qualification level.

  • Functional Skills Reading Level 2 – 20/30 (Indicative Pass Mark)

Booking Process

*Online exams take place Monday to Friday at 8:00am, 11:30am and 4:00pm. Please note that City & Guilds may book the exam with 30 minutes flexibility. Please follow the timing in the Talview email.

Please make sure you put your details exactly as it stated on your ID. If there are mistakes, you will not be able to take the test and there will not be any refund. Please inform us at least 7 working days before the exam day to avoid additional charges.

After you book, you will receive a PENDING Online Exam booking email from us.
Within 2 working days, we will process your booking and you will receive an APPROVAL email from us.

Once we approve your online exam booking, City & Guilds will send you a welcome email within 2 working days. The welcome email includes preparatory material, instructions on how to access the test and the system requirements. Please contact us after 2 working days if you did not receive the Welcome Email.

Please ensure following are done before the exam day:

  • Prepared for the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 exam and watched the sample video
  • Prepared your Windows computer, webcam and microphone and tested the network
  • Taken the candidate reckoner

Cancellation & Rescheduling

Please note that if you booked an exam, you must cancel at least 7 WORKING days before the exam time to get the full refund. There will be NO refund, under any circumstances, if you:

  • cancel after this period
  • don’t attend to your Online exam on time with required VALID ID
  • have access/technical problems resulting from your side
  • don’t show up
  • breach any exam rules or conditions

For cancellation, please reply to booking email you received from us. We will process your eligible cancellations as soon as we can. Refunds may take up to 20 working days.

For rescheduling, you must inform us by emailing at least 7 working days before the exam time.

If there is a technical problem on the exam day due your computer, internet connection, room or any other factor caused from your side, there will not be any refund or rescheduling. Any issue must be reported to us immediately in writing so we can raise it with the awarding body for investigation. Please read the Candidate Guide carefully to avoid problems on the exam day.

If you buy the course with an exam (bundle package), there will not any refund under any circumstances. i.e. you won’t get full or partial refund if you buy the course and exam bundle and requesting a refund for the exam at later stage.

We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule the booking at any time.

If you cancelled your exam correctly, on some occasions, you may still receive email reminders from City & Guilds. Please disregard these emails if received.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Functional Skills qualifications are Ofqual regulated and considered as equivalent to GCSEs. 

Thousands of clients have completed Functional Skills Maths Level 2 and Functional Skills English Level 2 qualifications with Intech Centre and then gone on to further study at University. Whilst the vast majority of Universities do accept Functional Skills we do ask that you contact the University you are applying to ensure they will accept Functional Skills.

Please note that you can directly sit for computerised Functional Skills Maths Level 2 or Functional Skills English Level 2 exams without doing the course

Functional Skills Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE A-C or Level 4+
Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE D-E.

Yes, you can! 

We offer exam only option where you can just pay and take the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 or Functional Skills English Level 2 exams. You do not have to do the course with us.

Functional Skills assessments are graded as either a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’. There are no proxies and no portfolio elements for these qualifications.
Functional Skills Maths Level 2: one computer based examination
– Non-Calculator Section – 25% of total marks – 25 minutes
– Calculator Section – 75% of total marks – 1 hour 20 minutes

Functional Skills English Level 2: two computer based examination and group based Speaking & Listening assessment.
Reading– 1 hour computer-based exam
Writing– 1 hour 20 minutes computer-based exam
Speaking & Listening– around 30 minutes group-based

You can do the exams in our centre in London or remotely/online. 

The length of time taken to receive your Functional Skills exam result will vary subject to time of year and the awarding organisation. As soon as we receive notification of your result we will contact you to let you know.

We generally receive the result within 5-7 working days; but officially, it may take up to 20 working days for City & Guilds to mark each Functional Skills exam and inform us. On exceptional circumstances, it may take up to 32 working days. 

If you pass, we will email you e-certificate within 1-2 weeks. Once we receive the physical certificate, we will email you as well.

City & Guilds is the awarding body for both Functional Skills Maths and English qualifications that we provide in the centre.

Centre-Based

Online/Remote 

You will need to bring your original and valid photo ID such as Passport, Driving Licences or Biometric Residence Card.

You are also required to arrive to the centre at least 30 minutes before your Functional Skills exam start time.

If you come on or after the test start time, you will not be able to take the test and there will not be any refund.

We provide the centre-based Functional Skills exams every Wednesday and Saturday at specified time slots which you will be notified of prior to the day of the exam.

We offer the online/remote Functional Skills Maths and English exams on weekdays. 

City & Guilds exams are live exams which means they will not share any details about the exam content. 

We will receive provisional result report and we will share this with you. This is the only document we will have about your exam.

Functional Skills Maths Course Summary

The Functional Skills Maths course is structured as individual online learning. This requires you to be independent up to a certain level and have the appropriate IT skills to work the programme.

You will however have a highly qualified and skilled tutor assisting you throughout your learning. They will oversee your progress including learning, mini tests, Skills Checks and assignments. You can request 30-minutes tutor support session each week if you feel you need support to overcome the difficulties you face in your learning content.  

By the end of the course, you will have updated your Maths skills in the following areas:

Whole numbers
This area of the programme shall bring you back to the basics by teaching you how to work with whole numbers which is the starting point for number confidence. This includes the calculation of whole numbers, ratios, formulae and proportions.

Fractions, decimals and percentages
You shall learn how to calculate mixed fractions and improper fractions, helping you further improve your mathematical skills. In addition, you will also learn how to convert fractions to decimals and percentages. These skills will assist you with day to day tasks such working out a 20% discount in the sales.

Common measures
Measuring skills are essential and are used on a daily basis for things such as measuring food for a recipes. Therefore, in this section of the programme, you shall learn how to measure area, volume and perimeter, how to apply measurements to diagrams as well as different shapes and angles.

Shapes and space (2D and 3D)
Shape skills can help you with everything from using space effectively when you are packing, to stacking shelves or planning a new room layout. In this section of the programme, you shall learn how to composite shapes, examine symmetrical shapes, nets and different viewpoints, such as bird’s eye view.

Handling data
This refers to statistical analysis. It will include gathering data from different graphs, charts and diagrams as well as calculating different types of averages.

Eligibility

In order to qualify for the government funding, you must be 19 years or older, living within a London Borough postcode, in receipt of unemployment benefit and have not completed a similar level qualification.

Full eligibility check will be carried out during Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) session and when provisional enrolment is processed. 

You need to carry out diagnostics within our centre after your IAG session.

Cancellation & Rescheduling

Please note that if you booked an exam, you must cancel at least 7 days before the exam time to get the full refund. There will NOT be any refund, under any circumstances, if you cancel after this period or don’t arrive to your booked exam slot on time with required documentation or don’t show up.

Exam Structure

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 exam made up of a single exam component comprising of 2 sections:

  • Non-Calculator Section – 25% of total marks – 25 minutes
  • Calculator Section – 75% of total marks – 1 hour 20 minutes

The Functional Skills Maths Level 2 exam is summative and 100% externally set and marked by City & Guilds. The final grade of your Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is based on the total marks achieved for both sections.

Duration

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 Exam is an 1 hour 45 minutes computer-based exam. 
It may take up to 20 working days, (on exceptional circumstances may take up to 32 working days), for City & Guilds to mark the exam and inform us.

It may then take up to 2 weeks for us to receive the actual certificate if the exam result is a pass.

Pass Mark

Learners will be awarded either a ‘PASS’ or ‘FAIL’ for the overall exam (i.e. Section 1 and Section 2 combined).

Functional Skills Maths Level 1 or 2 exam costs £110 for each attempt. Amount must be settle by credit or debit card on booking.

If you pass the exam and you want us to post the certificate to you, it will cost £10 (UK only).

We offer the online/remote Functional Skills Maths and English exams on weekdays. 

City & Guilds exams are live exams which means they will not share any details about the exam content. 

We will receive provisional result report and we will share this with you. This is the only document we will have about your exam.

You will develop your skills in using Microsoft Access including: understanding key concepts in database development and usage, creating a relational database, designing and refining queries using wildcards, parameters and calculations, using controls and sub forms to enhance forms and improve functionality. You will also learn how to create report controls to perform calculations and work with macros.

  • Understand key concepts of database development and usage.
  • Create a relational database using advanced table creation features and complex relationships between tables.
  • Design and use queries to create a table, update, delete and append data. Refine queries using wildcards, parameters and calculations.
  • Use controls and subforms to enhance forms and improve functionality.

You will focus on how to work with custom slide shows, apply slide show setting, and control a slide show.

  • Understand target audience, venue and technical considerations in presentation planning.

  • Enhance a presentation using built-in drawing and image tools. Use alternative text for accessibility.
  • Apply advanced chart formatting features and create and edit diagrams.
  • Insert audio and video, create audio and screen recordings, and apply built-in animation features.

IT Level 2 (ICDL Extra) course  is set up as individual online learning. This would require you to be independent up to a certain level and have the appropriate IT skills to work the programme. However, you shall have a highly qualified and skilled tutor to assist your throughout your whole programme and agree on your mandatory attendance days. They shall track your progress and offer you support through session plans, individual sessions, mini tests and assignments as well as any additional learning material that they may feel you require in accordance with any difficulties that you may face.

Microsoft Word
Microsoft word has quickly become one of the most used programmes within employment, therefore, this section will focus on teaching you how to use it in detail. Microsoft Excel

  • prevent viruses getting onto your computer through spam email;
