Intech Centre, in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), is proud to offer the ESOL with Employability Programme. This fully funded initiative is designed to help unemployed residents in Islington improve their English language skills while gaining essential employability skills to increase their chances of securing sustainable work.

Programme Highlights

  • English Language Training: Supports learners from Pre-Entry to Level 1, focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and listening to help them communicate effectively in daily life and the workplace.
  • Employability Skills Development: Learners receive support with CV writing, job applications, interview skills, and job searching.
  • Digital Skills Training: Helps participants gain confidence using computers, online job applications, and artificial intelligence (AI) tools for everyday tasks.
  • Confidence Building: Tailored sessions help learners become more self-assured in professional and social situations.
  • Support for Over-50s: Special guidance for older learners to overcome age-related employment barriers and access job opportunities.
  • One-to-One Careers Advice: Each learner works with a dedicated careers adviser to plan their learning and career path.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this fully funded programme, learners must:

  • Be aged 19 or over.
  • Live in London Borough of Islington.
  • Be unemployed and receiving benefits.
  • You must be referred by your Work Coach
  • Have not previously completed a similar qualification at the same level.

A full eligibility assessment will be completed during the Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG) session.

Enrolment Process

IT Level 2 (ICDL Extra) course  is set up as individual online learning. This would require you to be independent up to a certain level and have the appropriate IT skills to work the programme. However, you shall have a highly qualified and skilled tutor to assist your throughout your whole programme and agree on your mandatory attendance days. They shall track your progress and offer you support through session plans, individual sessions, mini tests and assignments as well as any additional learning material that they may feel you require in accordance with any difficulties that you may face.

By the end of this course you shall update your IT skills in the following areas:

Microsoft Word
Microsoft word has quickly become one of the most used programmes within employment, therefore, this section will focus on teaching you how to use it in detail. This will vary from basics such as how to change the font, style and/or size of your text to how to create detailed adjustments to suite you needs, for instance, adding hyperlinks to your work.

Microsoft Excel
The use of Microsoft Excel is ever growing and is becoming a very convenient and simple way to store data. Therefore, in this section you shall learn in detail how to enter data into excel, create spreadsheets and work out sums.

Microsoft PowerPoint
Microsoft PowerPoint is one of the most favoured programmes when it comes to creating presentations. You shall learn how to create different presentation slides, choose different backgrounds and adaptations as well has how to include different graphs in accordance with your needs.

Improving Productivity of Using IT

IT User Fundamentals
IT User Fundamentals will show you how to maintain the hardware, software and files that your computer uses, so it keeps working well. You will learn how to:

  • use the right IT systems to meet your needs;
  • organise, store and access information on the desktop or in folders and files;
  • follow and understand the need for online safety; and
  • carry out routine maintenance of IT systems, like updating your software and maintaining your drives and discs.

Electronic Communication
Email and the internet give us access to a whole new world of online communication and entertainment. This course focuses on communicating by email and over the internet. You will learn how to:

  • send, receive and organise emails using Microsoft Outlook Express;
  • use attachments;
  • manage an address book of contacts or distribution lists;
  • use instant messaging and internet conferencing;
  • plan your social life by using the internet and social media to find information, organise events and buy tickets;
  • use a search engine to find, bookmark, save and print information from websites;
  • buy and pay for goods safely on the web;
  • use the calendar and task manager in Outlook to plan events and manage your time and tasks;
  • download useful software and use the internet to transfer files legally and safely; and
  • publish information on your own website, web space or blog.

IT Security for Users
IT Security for Users will help you to understand the IT security threats facing computers, so you can protect your data and stay safe. You will learn how to:

  • create user accounts and passwords to protect your personal data on the web;
  • understand the risks of online communities and social networking;
  • understand different types of malware and what they can do to your computer;
  • prevent viruses getting onto your computer through spam email;
  • avoid online fraud, like phishing scams;
  • keep your network secure, especially when using wi-fi;
    back up data and recognise different portable storage devices like USB sticks and recordable DVDs; and
  • understand how data protection laws work.

Functional Skills Maths Course Summary

The Functional Skills Maths course is structured as individual online learning. This requires you to be independent up to a certain level and have the appropriate IT skills to work the programme.

You will however have a highly qualified and skilled tutor assisting you throughout your learning. They will oversee your progress including learning, mini tests, Skills Checks and assignments. You can request 30-minutes tutor support session each week if you feel you need support to overcome the difficulties you face in your learning content.  

By the end of the course, you will have updated your Maths skills in the following areas:

Whole numbers
This area of the programme shall bring you back to the basics by teaching you how to work with whole numbers which is the starting point for number confidence. This includes the calculation of whole numbers, ratios, formulae and proportions.

Fractions, decimals and percentages
You shall learn how to calculate mixed fractions and improper fractions, helping you further improve your mathematical skills. In addition, you will also learn how to convert fractions to decimals and percentages. These skills will assist you with day to day tasks such working out a 20% discount in the sales.

Common measures
Measuring skills are essential and are used on a daily basis for things such as measuring food for a recipes. Therefore, in this section of the programme, you shall learn how to measure area, volume and perimeter, how to apply measurements to diagrams as well as different shapes and angles.

Shapes and space (2D and 3D)
Shape skills can help you with everything from using space effectively when you are packing, to stacking shelves or planning a new room layout. In this section of the programme, you shall learn how to composite shapes, examine symmetrical shapes, nets and different viewpoints, such as bird’s eye view.

Handling data
This refers to statistical analysis. It will include gathering data from different graphs, charts and diagrams as well as calculating different types of averages.

Benefits

In addition to updating mathematical skills, you will gain a recognised and highly desired GCSE equivalent Functional Skills Maths qualification. This will provide you with a good foundation of skills in the field of work or any further education you may decide to proceed with.

Qualification

At the end of your Functional Skills Maths course, you will take a mock test and if successful, you will be eligible to take the Functional Skills Maths exam.

Upon successfully passing the exams, you will obtain a Functional Skills Maths certificate from City and Guilds which is recognised and valued as a GCSE equivalent qualification.

Please note that it may take up to 20 working days for City & Guilds to mark exam and inform us of the results. If you have successfully passed all exams, it will then take up to 2 weeks for us to receive the physical certificate.

Duration

The duration of this course will vary depending on which level you begin with and how long it takes you to absorb the material. Each level must last maximum of 4 weeks.

During your enrolment, you and your advisor will discuss, in detail, how long each level should take you in accordance with the course layout and the level you achieved in your initial assessments. They will then set you a deadline and offer guidance and support to ensure that you reach it.

Eligibility

In order to qualify for the government funding, you must be 19 years or older, living within a London Borough postcode, in receipt of unemployment benefit and have not completed a similar level qualification.

Full eligibility check will be carried out during Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) session and when provisional enrolment is processed. 

You need to carry out diagnostics within our centre after your IAG session.

If you find reading challenging on a daily basis, this course will help you in overcoming this barrier. You will learn how to read effectively, grasping the context and purpose of a text, and identifying the different techniques used in accordance with the style of writing.

Writing
You will be shown how to plan your work in detail and how to structure it accordingly as to bring your points across in the most effective way. This will in turn enable you to write more clearly.

Vocabulary, Grammar & Spelling
You will learn the basic uses of grammar, improve your spelling and widen your vocabulary. This will include differentiating between tenses, learning how to use punctuation effectively and practicing your spelling through set activities.

Speaking
You will improve your communications skills with the assistance of your tutor. You will be encouraged to communicate and share your ideas verbally, present information and ask questions.

Qualification

At the end of your course, you will take the following exams:

Reading Exam – 1-hour computer-based exam

Upon successfully passing all three exams, you will obtain a Functional Skills English certificate from City and Guilds which is recognised and valued as a GCSE equivalent qualification.

You will learn how to use built-in drawing and image tools, apply advanced chart formatting features and create and edit diagrams, insert movies and sound and apply built-in animation features. You will focus on how to work with custom slide shows, apply slide show setting, and control a slide show.

Finally, you will focus on how to improve your productivity in general through IT use.

Duration

The length of IT Level 3 (ICDL Advanced) course will vary slightly, depending on how quickly you absorb the material, however, in general it should last for an average of 12-16 weeks.

Upon your enrolment, you shall discuss in detail with the tutor how long the programme should last. They will then set you a deadline and offer you assistance and support to ensure that you reach it.

Intech Centre is now offering the BCS Essential Digital Skills for Work course (IT for Beginners). These IT skills are essential in many job roles as more digital technology is used to carry out tasks in every day life. 

Our BCS  Digital Skills – Basic IT course is designed for adults with little prior experience of using digital devices or the internet.

This course cover all five skills areas set out in the national standards. These are:

  • Using devices and handling information.

The BCS Essential Digital Skills for Work Entry 3 (IT for Beginners) course is composed of five skill areas:

  1. Using Devices and Handling Information Learners will be able to navigate devices and the internet to find and store information.
  2. Creating and Editing Learners will be able to create a variety of document types and perform straightforward editing techniques.
  3. Communicating Learners will be able to communicate and manage contacts using a suitable online method such as email or video calling.
  4. Transacting Learners will be able to fill in online forms to make safe, secure purchases.
  5. Being Safe and Responsible Online Learners will know how to keep devices and information secure. Learners will also be able to identify and demonstrate responsible behaviour and report any concerns.
